The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, from estate vineyards in Knights Valley, is deep, and pliant in feel. Varietal aromatics and flavors lie in the background, while the wine's fruit intensity give the wine its weight and overall resonance.
Lifted floral notes give the 2016 Pinot Noir Maggy Hawk its distinctly lifted, gracious personality. The 50% whole clusters are nicely integrated. The flavors are bright, precise and nicely sculpted in this light to mid-weight Pinot. The Maggy Hawk is an addition to the Copain range.
Another addition to the range, the 2016 Pinot Noir Sealift emerges from a vineyard in Annapolis. Despite its coastal location, the Sealift tastes and feels riper than most of the other wines in this lineup. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather and licorice add to an impression of generosity. For now, the Sealift Pinot appears to be a work in progress.

Dried cherry, smoke, licorice, tobacco, spice and mint give the 2015 Pinot Noir Les Voisins its lifted personality. The 2015 offers good up-front attack, but then loses a bit of persistence through the mid-palate and finish. The 2015 conveys a distinct impression that the fruit was harvested very early.
This pale pink colored Rose made from Cabernet Franc opens with a unique light orange and watermelon like bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced and smooth. The flavor profile is a gentle mineral infused light strawberry and almond blend with a hint of German pilsner beer towards to end. The finish is dry and its flavors fade away nicely. This Rose would pair nicely with oysters. 88 points. Very good.
This light yellow colored Viognier opens with a pear and apple bouquet with a hint of pineapple. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, acidic and juicy. The flavor profile is a mineral infused peach with hints of pineapple, ginger and white pepper. The finish is dry and its acidity and flavors are nicely extended. This Viognier would pair well with grilled lemon chicken. Very good.
The 2015 Cambria Chardonnay Katherine's Vineyard Signature Collection wafts from the glass with an attractive nose of honeyed citrus and flowers. On the palate, the wine is glossy and medium to full-bodied, with decent freshness and a clean, uncomplicated finish.
An attractive wine, the 2014 Merlot (Alexander Valley) is fresh, floral and nicely lifted, with good brightness to the red berry fruit. Drink this light to medium-bodied, refreshing Merlot over the next few years. This is an especially fragrant style. A little more depth of fruit would be nice though.
Citrus and floral notes give the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc (Alexander Valley) its bright, crisp personality. This is the leanest and most taut of the four Sauvignon Blancs I tasted from Matanzas Creek.
The 2016 Pinot Noir Vintner's Reserve is soft, gracious and silky, with lifted aromatics that play off the bright red fruit nicely. This is an especially perfumed style. Drink it over the next few years.
Approachable and spirited, with notes of huckleberry and cracked pepper, showing a hint of toffee on the finish.
Creamy oak and savory herb notes combine to give this a rich mix of sage and underbrush flavors that complement the dusty wild berry and toasty oak elements.
The 2016 Chardonnay Avant is laced with hints of lemon peel, white flowers and orchard fruit. This refreshing, mid-weight Chardonnay offers tons of personality and quality for a very fair price. There is so much to like here.
The 2016 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is one of the more tightly wound wines in this range today. Stylistically, the Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is built on persistence, depth and structure, rather than overt fruit.
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) is forward, supple and fruity, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Sweet floral notes add nuance to the red berry and plum fruit in this mid-weight, open-knit Cabernet. I tasted the 2015 from tank just prior to bottling.
The 2016 Pinot Noir Tous Ensemble is an attractive, entry-level Pinot with good aromatic nuance and lovely red berry fruit. Cedar, spice and floral notes are all nicely lifted in this delicate, understated Pinot. I would prefer to drink the 2016 over the next few years given its mid-weight structure and somewhat fleeting style.
The 2016 Chardonnay Tous Ensemble is delicate and understated, with lovely orchard fruit and floral character. This is an attractive, entry-level Chardonnay from Copain. I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later given its mid-weight structure.
Offering up a sweet bouquet of red berries, loamy soil, tea leaf and cocoa, the 2016 Pinot Noir from Carmel Road is a medium-bodied, open-knit wine with a delicate core of fruit and melting tannins. Bottled under screw cap, it's a pretty but uncomplicated Pinot Noir to enjoy in the near term.
Opening in the glass with notes of crunchy berry fruit, creamy new oak, spice and candied peel, the ambitiously priced 2015 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard Signature Collection is medium-bodied and rather fleeting on the palate, with some austere oak tannins asserting themselves on the finish.
The 2015 Chardonnay Katherine's Vineyard reveals an attractive nose of lemon rind, toast and buttered apples. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, fresh and open-knit, with less texture and weight than the considerably more expensive Signature Collection bottling, but marginally greater freshness.
The 2015 Pinot Noir Clone 667 from Nielson (which describes itself as "native of Dijon, France") offers up aromas of smoky red and black fruit, licorice and new oak, followed by a medium-bodied palate with fine tannins but an abrupt, fluid finish.
This very pale straw Pinot Grigio from Murphy Goode opens with a gentle white peach, tangerine and grapefruit rind bouquet. It is medium bodied, rather simple and round, with crisp acidity. It displays citrus and peach pit flavors along with mild minerality. Its moderate finish contains hints of pineapple. Enjoy this Pinot Grigio with Maryland crab cakes. 87 points. Very good.
Baked apple and dried apricot flavors dominate this easygoing style. The spicy finish shows hints of caramel.
Screw cap. An excellent, fine quality Sauvignon. It is supple, full bodied, balanced, and long on the finish, tasting of peach, apple, honeysuckle, lemon grass, white pepper, and lime. Excellent value. 4.9% Semillon. Fermented and aged: 62% in stainless steel, 38% in French oak barrels. 4+ stars, excellent.
