This wine is good and rich while staying balanced. It offers ripe plum and blackberry aromas, abundant fruit flavors and subtle oak spices. It will be hard to beat when a bold, firm wine is called for.
Made from Pinot Noir grapes, the Rose shows pretty white rose and damp earth tones that collide with undertones of blood orange rind and honeydew melon that meld in the glass. The palate has dazzling minerality and a silky texture that entices, delivering bright red fruits and citrus rind accents. This is just awesome stuff that will cellar well for another five years. Kudos to superstar winemaker Erik Kramer.
The 2019 Gran Moraine Rose is another enticing Rose bottling from this great Oregon estate. On the nose this takes on layers of melon and ripe raspberry tones that are woven together with wet stone accents that mingle in the glass. The freshness, astringency and texture is awesome here, as mouth-watering acidity greets you mid-palate. This really needs a hot summer afternoon.
The 2016 Gran Moraine Chardonnay is an outstanding wine that was aged for fifteen months in a combination of French oak barrels and stainless steel before bottling. Toasty brioche, Macadamia nut and shades of Pink Lady apple all fill the nose. The palate is beautifully balanced with a vibrant sense of acidity. With marvelous length, this beautiful bottling will be best enjoyed over the next seven to ten years.
Seeing 20/20 – Sonoma & Anderson Valley New ReleasesThe 2017 Pinot Noir Afleet is pretty and beautifully lifted. Delicate floral and spice notes grace this ethereal, silky Pinot. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries and white pepper, along with 30% whole clusters, give the Afleet its gracious feel.
Seeing 20/20 – Sonoma & Anderson Valley New ReleasesThe 2017 Pinot Noir Fiddlestix Vineyard is pretty, floral and quite savory. Cedar, tobacco, dried herbs, mint and earthy notes all develop nicely with a bit of air. Time in the glass releases some of the wilder, gamier notes that are typical of this Sta. Rita Hills site.
Seeing 20/20 – Sonoma & Anderson Valley New ReleasesThe 2018 Pinot Noir (Russian River) is a very pretty appellation-level wine in this range. Floral, finely cut and lifted, the 2018 captures all of the energy of the growing season. Crushed red berries and floral notes add energy to this medium-bodied, refreshing Pinot. I can hardly wait to taste the rest of the 2018 Hartford Court Pinots.
Seeing 20/20 – Sonoma & Anderson Valley New ReleasesThe 2017 Pinot Noir Seven's Bench is soft, creamy and engaging—all qualities that make it an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Spice, leather, cedar and earthy tones give the Seven's Bench a distinctly brambly character that is quite appealing.
Seeing 20/20 – Sonoma & Anderson Valley New ReleasesThe 2017 Syrah Les Voisins is a very pretty and expressive Yorkville Highlands Syrah. Savory herbs, tobacco, mint and dried cherry are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop in the glass. The 2017 has so much going on, especially within its peer group.
Seeing 20/20 – Sonoma & Anderson Valley New ReleasesThe 2017 Pinot Noir Côte Bannie is a powerful, dense wine. A whole range earthy, savory notes add to an impression or rusticity that accompanies the dried cherry, plum and sage flavors. This pleasantly rustic Pinot is best enjoyed at the dinner table. There is plenty of personality, that much is clear.
Seeing 20/20 – Sonoma & Anderson Valley New ReleasesThe 2018 Chardonnay DuPratt Vineyard is a pretty rich wine, especially given where these wines have been in the past. Orchard fruit, orange peel, spice and tropical overtones add character. This late-ripening site yields a distinctly rich, phenolic style of Chardonnay, but with modest alcohol breadth.
Turned earth and pungent forest give way to thick, concentrated tannin and oak in this hearty, full-bodied red that displays deft varietal character. Cranberry, strawberry and cherry flavors wrap around dried herb and a hint of rose, finding seamless harmony on the finish.
A wine made in tribute of daughter Julia Jackson's relationship with her late vintner father, Jess, this wine delivers rich, rewarding smoked cherry and supple texture for a fair price. The luxurious red fruit is cradled in toasted oak and a lasting seasoning of cola and baking spice, providing plenty of complex flavor.
Chianti Classico 2018, pure Mediterranean essence in the glassBlack plums, licorice and black tea leaves are the main hints of this young dark red matrix. Medium-full body, ripe and soft tannins in extraction and a well-designed light finish. Drink now.
Many consumers shy away from Riesling because it comes in a range of sweetness, which is not always apparent from the label. Penner-Ash uses the scale developed by the International Riesling Foundation on the back label that indicates this wine is “medium dry” on the scale that goes from “dry” (the least sweet) to “sweet” with “medium dry” and “medium sweet” in between. Basically, a 1 to 4 scale going from dry to sweet. What’s really important though is the wonderful balance of this Riesling. There’s terrific ying-yang of a hint of sweetness offset perfectly by a lime-like zing. There’s a hint of sweetness in the finish, but the overall impression is one of zesty minerals. It would be a perfect choice as a refreshing aperitif, with full-flavored Asian cuisine or with cheese at the end of a meal.
Twenty years ago world-class Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands was a mere pipe dream. Today this cool region in the midst of Monterey County stands as one of finest sources in California – along with the Russian River Valley and the Anderson Valley – for top-notch Pinot Noir. The 2017 La Crema offers a richly layered palate, with aromas of cherry and strawberry, complemented nicely by a touch of wood spice.
Tasting of strawberry puree, this fanciful, fruit-forward wine is smooth and silky in tannin, with a creamy palate that appeals. Medium bodied, it offers richness within context and balance, finishing in fresh acidity.
Big and ripe, featuring concentrated dark cherry, plum and blackberry flavors that are well-knit. Minerally midpalate, with a lively and vibrant finish that offers concentrated cedar and spice notes.
This bright yellow colored Chardonnay from Diatom opens with a pineapple and ginger bouquet with a hint of lemon. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, slightly acidic and fresh. The flavor profile is a lemon tart with notes of pineapple and gentle minerality. I also detected some hints of clementine. The finish is dry and refreshing. This wine would be a nice summer alternative for Chard fans while on the beach. It would pair well with a bucket of fried clams from the clam shack.
Napa Valley & California Cabernet Sauvignon 2015: Panel tasting results Very rich, oaky nose, backed by vibrant blackcurrant fruit. Fleshy and concentrated, leading to a long, refreshing finish. Shows presence and force.
Earthy, textured and thickly rich, this is a well-made full-bodied wine, with grip and power to spare. Dark-cherry cola mixes with cardamom and orange peel, the oak and tannin behaved but undoubtedly present.
How to buy wine for a party on a budget A brilliant party pour would be 2017 Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay from California. It totally overdelivers with its come-hither aromas and flavours of toasted hazelnut, cooked apples and crème brûlée that taste elegant, long, and more expensive than the bottle prices suggests.
Up From The Cellar #7 & Misc New Releases The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Knights Valley comes from a warmer appellation yet still has vivid, bright aromatics of green citrus, peach, honeysuckle, and a distinct minerality. Rounded, medium-bodied, and beautifully textured on the palate, it's already hard to resist, yet I suspect it will evolve nicely on its depth of fruit and balance.
Up From The Cellar #7 & Misc New Releases From a cooler, higher elevation appellation in Sonoma, the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Bennet Valley offers more purity and precision as well as terrific notes of tart citrus, salty minerality, sappy flowers, and mint. It's another beautifully balanced, medium-bodied, high-quality Sauvignon Blanc from this estate that's going to have at least 4-5 years of prime drinking.
Central Coast: The 2017s and 2018s The 2017 Chardonnay Jackson Estate Santa Maria Valley offers a solid bouquet of caramelized citrus, orange blossom, brioche, and a hint of spice. It's rich and medium-bodied, with terrific purity, plenty of ripe, sweet fruit, and a great finish.
