Leading off the 2014s, the 2014 Syrah Garys' Vineyard is a rich, voluptuous and gorgeously pure Syrah that offers lots of creme de cassis, spice box and caramelized cherries in its medium-bodied, supple and textured style. It's actually a small step up over the 2013 and should drink nicely through 2022 at a minimum.
One of the more finesse-driven wines from Adam, the 325-case 2015 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard is a medium-bodied, silky and incredibly finely textured barrel sample that's loaded with notions of violets, spring flowers and hints of plums. It shows a touch of oak at present, but it has beautiful purity of fruit.
From a site located on the eastern end of the Sta. Rita Hills, the 2015 Pinot Noir John Sebastiano Vineyard is a complex, savory, medium-bodied and elegant effort that has lots of ripe currants, licorice and dried spice aromas and flavors. It shines for its elegance and finesse on the palate, but those Sta. Rita Hills tannin come through on the finish. Nevertheless, I'm sure this will be reasonably approachable on release.
The 2015 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard will certainly be an outstanding wine. Coming from granite soils on the warmer, southern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands, it gives up lots of the textbook minerality I always find from this site as well as purple fruits, black raspberries, wild herbs and violet aromas and flavors. Firm, fresh and focused on the palate, it will need a year in the cellar to round into form.
From a terrific vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, the 2015 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard is textbook wine from this site that offers tons of minerality and earth intermixed with notions of peppery herbs, currants, black cherries and mint. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it has fine tannin and notable balance. It should hit the ground running, yet evolve gracefully as well.
I loved the 2014 Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands and this soft, silky, complex beauty is certainly a match for a number of the more expensive single vineyard releases. Giving up lots of Bing cherry, crushed flowers, black raspberry and spice, it has medium-bodied richness, no hard edges and a seamless texture, all of which allow it to shine today. Nevertheless, it should evolve gracefully given its impeccable balance.
There's a tiny 200 cases of the 2015 Pinot Noir Clos Pepe Vineyard as this vineyard was hit by frost. Violets, black and blue fruits and dried flowers all emerge from this spice-filled, primary, medium to full-bodied effort that shines for its depth of fruit.
The 2015 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard is primary and unevolved (more so than the 2014 was at this stage) and has perfumed, exotic notes of passion fruits, spring flowers and violets. Medium-bodied, rich and nicely concentrated, with high quality tannin, it should certainly be an outstanding wine to drink on release and over the following 7-8 years.
Another terrific barrel sample from the Santa Lucia Highlands, the 2015 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard offers lots of creme de cassis, licorice, crushed violets and hints of sweet oak in its sappy, floral and vibrant personality. Again, the fruit profile here leans towards the darker end of the spectrum. Like the other 2015s, I suspect it will shine right out of the gate given its purity of fruit and nicely balanced style. There are 125 cases made.
The deep purple colored 2014 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard is an outstanding, fresh and lively effort that offers lots of sappy herbs, black raspberry and violet aromas and flavors. It's beautifully polished and has a charming, slightly straightforward feel, all of which suggest drinking over the coming 4-5 years.
Lastly, the 2014 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard is a fresh, bright and almost racy 2014 that has notes of plums, sappy flowers, cherries and passion fruit front and center. Medium-bodied and nicely layered on the palate, it walks a fine line with regards to too much acidity, but it holds it together and is certainly an enjoyable, pretty and elegant wine. Drink it over the coming 4-6 years.
Bottled in April of this year (as were all of these 2014s), the 2014 Syrah Santa Lucia Highlands is a smoking value that readers should snatch up. Jammy dark fruits, black pepper, wild herbs and black cherry notes all emerge from this beauty, and it's medium to full-bodied, nicely textured and balanced on the palate. It has tons of charm and will drink well for 4-5 years.
Lastly, the 2014 Syrah Susan's Hill is certainly outstanding, but is not one of the greatest vintages of the cuvee. Dried herbs, dried earth, sweet red and black fruits and a touch of that rock minerality that's common from this site all emerge from this medium-bodied, nicely balanced, charming and forward Syrah that's ideal for drinking over the coming 4-5 years.
