Bold red and black fruit, spice, sturdy acidity, supple tannins - this baby fires on all cylinders. It's a blend of mostly Syrah, Zinfandel and Merlot, with some Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and other varieties. The fruit is lush and rich, woven with spice and alcohol and wood. Winemaster Randy Ullom writes that it brings a smile to your face - that was my thought exactly.
Great structure, fine-grained tannins, intense fruit flavors and notes of cedar and vanilla all unite for a Cabernet that will probably make a grilled steak pale. It's a riveting wine displaying a lush showcase of black cherry, blackberry, black currant and dark chocolate. Maybe it's that extra smack of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that so expands the flavor palette. That, and the fact the fruit is from mountain and hillside vineyards in Sonoma County. Impressive.
A dark, mysterious wine, the 2014 Pinot Noir Van Der Kamp Vineyard offers a beguiling interplay of dark-fleshed fruit and expressive aromatics, with plenty of support from the mountain tannins. Plum, sage, menthol and licorice add further shades of nuance.
The 2014 Pinot Noir Lingenfelder Vineyard is one of the more aromatic, high-toned Pinots in the Siduri range. Expressive floral notes meld into sweet red cherry, plum, spice and new leather. This parcel is a blend of Pommard and Martini clone Pinot. A dollop of whole clusters on the Pommard section adds an attractive lifted character that is especially evident on the finish.
The 2014 Zinfandel Limerick Lane Vineyard captures the essence of this historic site. The flavors are dark, bold and intense, throughout, with plenty of ripeness, richness and overall intensity yet also good acidity throughout. With time in the glass, the wine gains freshness and focus. The Limerick Lane is a big boy, that is for sure.
Novy's 2014 Zinfandel Papera Ranch Vineyard is defined by a touch of Carignane in the vineyard that gives it a sense of aromatic lift and its red-toned fruit character. Pomegranate, sweet red cherry, wild flowers and white pepper are all nicely delineated in the glass.
The 2014 Pinot Noir Betty Ann Vineyard brings together the fruit-forward intensity of Russian River with considerable delineation and energy, two qualities that are hard to find here. Bright floral notes and vibrant acidity give the wine much of its energy. The 2014 is shaping up to be a real beauty.
The 2014 Pinot Meunier Van Der Kamp Vineyard is a pretty, delicate wine with lifted aromatics, nicely sculpted fruit and lovely overall balance. Crushed flowers, tobacco, mint and dried cherries add shades of nuance on the mid-weight finish. The Pinot Meunier is a bit less fruit forward than most Siduri wines, with plenty in the way of floral and savory character.
The 2014 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch Vineyard is another pretty wine with plenty of immediacy. Sweet red cherry, cola, mint, wild flowers and sweet spices are pushed forward. This is a classic Keefer Pinot built for near-term enjoyment. Here, too, it would be great to see a little more complexity and persistence.
The 2014 Pinot Noir (Sonoma County) is bold, juicy and forward, with plenty of character, especially for its modest price. Dark cherry, plum, tobacco, cedar and leather are pushed forward in a super-affordable, delicious Pinot to drink over the next 2-3 years.
The 2014 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) is plump, juicy and forward. Dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol and cola race out of the glass. This exuberant, flamboyant Pinot is sure to deliver considerable pleasure over the next few years. The addition of the fruit that would have been used for the Sonoma Coast bottling has improved the Russian River Pinot.
The 2014 Pinot Noir Pratt Vineyard - Sexton Road is a bit ripe and juicy for a Sonoma Coast Pinot. The flavors are dark, bold and intense, but in exchange, readers will find an attractive, large-scaled Pinot, that will drink well upon release. Black cherry, blackberry, cola and sweet spices meld into the plush finish.
The 2013 Syrah/Grenache Simpson Vineyard is one of the best wines in the range, and also the best value. The flavors are really popping today. Violet, lavender, mint, earthiness and spice notes meld into an expressive core of dark blue/black fruit. Bright, juicy and expressive, the 2013 hits all the right notes. If the future of Novy is more wines like this, the future looks especially bright. In 2013, the Syrah and Grenache were co-fermented.
Savory herbs, leather, tobacco, blue/purplish fruit are some of the notes that take shape in the Pinot Noir Sonatera Vineyard. One of the more savory wines in the range, the Sonatera will also likely need time in bottle for the tannins to soften.
The 2014 Pinot Noir Ewald Vineyard is bold, juicy and immediate, but also lacks the mid-palate depth and persistence of the best wines in this lineup. Bright red cherry, raspberry and sweet floral notes are some of the signatures. The 2014 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later.
An addition to the range, the 2015 Viognier Saralee's Vineyard is generous and open-knit. Apricot jam, honey, chamomile and exotic flowers are all pushed forward. A slight hint of reduction remains, but the wine won't be bottled until March. There is plenty of potential here.
The 2014 Pinot Noir Parsons' Vineyard stands out in this lineup because of its ripe, slightly roasted personality. Dark plum, mocha, spice, leather and cloves meld together in the glass. Today, the Parsons tastes a bit heavy and like it may have been picked on the later side of things.
The 2014 Zinfandel (Russian River Valley) is a soft, forward wine ideal for drinking young. Tobacco, herb, smoke and dark plum fruits are among the signatures. Ellsbury and Limerick Lane, both at the northern end of the Russian River next to Dry Creek, are the two main sites here, and that is what comes through; the darker, riper side of Zinfandel. This is a delicious wine for the money.
The Papera Ranch vineyard was planted in 1934, the year after Prohibition's repeal. This interpretation from Adam and Dianna Lee, who also make the Siduri wines, shows Sonoma Zinfandel's finessed side. It's extremely aromatic, wafting lavender and herbs, moving to red berries and red meat on the palate. For its not-inconsiderable alcohol and structure, it remains light on its feet.
This supple pinot has a core of red fruit. Aromas and flavors of raspberry and cherry, anise, forest floor and cracked black pepper. Nice length. Striking.
Most wine lovers recognize the Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve line of wines, ubiquitous in grocery stores across America. The K-J Grand Reserve wines are often overlooked, yet should not be, because they deliver a more complex, rewarding drinking experience, a huge step up from Vintner’s Reserve. Grand Reserve winemaster Randy Ullom has access to outstanding-quality grapes from K-J’s extensive vineyard holdings and produces blends that are greater than the sum of their parts. The result is a Cab with aromas and flavors of forest floor, cedar, cassis, black plum, vanillin and dark chocolate. Inviting savory aromas lead to a fresh, brisk mouthful of beautifully ripened red cherry, dark berry and plum flavors, with supple tannins providing a smooth finish.

Mocha and dark chocolate with big black plums. Full-bodied and supple.
