Journey's 2013 Chardonnay deftly balances richness with finesse. Apricot pit, orange blossom, mint, spice, butter, brioche and smoke are woven together in a hugely appealing fabric of aromas, flavors and textures. Voluptuous and layered in the glass, the 2013 possesses striking depth, but no excess heaviness. All the elements fall into place effortlessly.
Like the Highwire, the 2013 Zinfandel Hartford Vineyard is very much explosive and powerful, but it also has more than enough fruit and pure mid-palate density to bury the tannins. Layers of fruit build to a huge, voluptuous finish. Today, the 2013 is a baby. I imagine it will still be fabulous at age twenty, perhaps beyond.
The 2013 Zinfandel Dina's Vineyard emerges from a parcel of 100 year-old head-trained vines next to Highwire. Savory herbs, flowers and distinctly red-toned fruits open up in a precise, chiseled Zinfandel long on personality. A dollop of Carignane in this parcel seems to add brightness and nuance. Polished and silky through to the finish, the 2013 Dina's is one of many highlights in this exceptional range from Hartford.
At present, the 2013 Chardonnay Broken Road is tightly wound and austere, yet it also appears to be holding back much of its potential. Sage, mint, pine and a host of savory/mineral notes are woven throughout a core of distinctly stony, yellow-fleshed fruit. Lifted, floral aromatics add the final layers of complexity to a Chardonnay that is going to need time to fully blossom.
Blue and black stone fruits, pepper, savory herbs and dark spices are some of the notes that inform the 2013 Zinfandel Highwire Vineyard. At once quite ripe and also tannic, the Highwire is a bit explosive in style, but all the elements come together very nicely. The huge, resonant finish makes a statement, that is for sure.
The 2012 Legacy Red Wine, Stonestreet's top wine, boasts gorgeous intensity and depth, not to mention considerable appeal. Cedar, smoke, tobacco and raspberry jam meld into brighter, floral notes that add lift and precision. Expressive ferrous notes add nuance on the close. The 2012 Legacy is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Stonestreet's Alexander Mountain Estate. Stylistically, it sits between the Rockfall and Christopher's Cabernets.
Lemon peel, white pepper, flowers and mint are all found in the 2013 Chardonnay Upper Barn. Next to the other wines in the range, the Upper Barn comes across as a bit compact, but it is quite pretty and expressive just the same. The Upper Barn emerges from one of the higher blocks on the property.
Powerful and pedigreed to the core, the 2012 Merlot Knights Valley is loaded with dark blue and black fruit, graphite, savory herbs, lavender, smoke and licorice. One of the standouts in this range, the 2012 captures the essence of Knights Valley in its power, tension and energy. Like all the Matanzas Creek Merlots, the Knights Valley is quite Old World-leaning.
The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Helena Bench is the most textured and resonant of the four Matanzas Sauvignons. Rich and expansive on the palate, the 2013 is utterly captivating.
One of the many highlights in this range, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Jackson Estate Trace Ridge bursts from the glass with tons of Knights Valley personality. Game, smoke, cedar and savory herbs add nuance to a huge core of dark fruit. The 2012 is going to need at least a year or two to settle down as the tannins are imposing, but there is plenty to look forward to. This is an impressive showing.
The 2013 Chardonnay Four Hearts Vineyards is a classic Russian River Chardonnay built on texture and exuberance. Honey, almonds dried herbs and apricots all flesh out in a generous, deeply expressive Chardonnay. Most of this fruit comes from Tom Dehlinger.
Dark red cherries, plums, lavender and sweet spices make a hugely positive first impression in the 2013 Zinfandel Jolene's Vineyard. Violets, smoke, mint and darker stone fruits develop in the glass, all supported by veins of bright acidity and tannin, both of which help convey freshness. This old-vine site on Olivet Road confers tons of pure personality.
The 2013 Zinfandel Russian River Valley is an attractive, boisterous wine to drink now and over the next few years. Dark red cherry, raspberry, spice, and mint inform the juicy finish. The 2013 is gracious, inviting and pretty much impossible to resist.
Savory herbs, tobacco, smoke, iron and dried flowers form a striking tapestry of aromas and flavors in the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Speciale. Delicate and understated in the glass, the 2012 impresses for its exceptional overall balance and pure pedigree. This is another wine with a very bright future.
The 2013 Pinot Noir Fog Dance Vineyard is one of the most distinctive wines in the range. Exotic, spiced aromatics add gorgeous complexity to a core of dark red and black stone fruits. All the elements fall into place in an effortless, impeccably balanced Pinot full of personality and class. The 2013 is both exuberant and intensely aromatic.
The 2013 Pinot Noir Arrendell Vineyard is the most complex and nuanced of these Pinot Noirs from Arrendell. Exotic, perfumed and utterly beguiling, the Arrendell races from the glass with hints of pomegranate, blood orange, wild cherries and savory herbs. The combination of old vines and the Martini clone collide to produce a Pinot Noir of rare pedigree and class. There is a lot to like here.
The 2013 Pinot Noir Velvet Sisters is going to need some time to open up. Today, it is the wine's total sense of purity that is compelling. Freshly cut flowers and stone fruits emerge gradually, but the 2013 remains quite embryonic and not fully formed. Still, the wine's potential is pretty easy to see.
The 2013 Chardonnay Seascape Vineyard is quite a bit richer and oilier than the Jennifer's. Mango, pineapple, spices, butter and French oak blossom in a wine that captures a striking interplay of intense fruit allied to bright, piercing acidity. This is another impeccable, absolutely beautiful Chardonnay from Hartford Court.
The 2013 Chardonnay Stone Cote Vineyard (from Durell) is rich, sumptuous and layered, with attractive floral, honeyed overtones and plenty of orchard fruits. Hints of orange peel, lemon oil, hazelnuts, spices and butter add further dimensions of nuance on the finish. The 2013 stands out for its voluptuous, inviting personality and silky finish.
Orange blossom, burnt sugar, hazelnuts, spices and roasted almonds open up in the Chardonnay Three Jacks Vineyard. This parcel, which sits within Dutton, is planted with a variety of clones, but it is the Rued clone in particular that add a distinctly exotic flair to both the flavors and textures. The voluptuous, oily finish is super-distinctive.
Dark raspberries, blueberry jam, smoke, spices and new leather inform Stonestreet's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Monolith. A sumptuous, textured Cabernet, the 2012 remains quite open and forward for such a big wine. The racy finish only adds near-term appeal, but there is also more than enough depth to support another decade or so of highly pleasurable drinking.
A striking wine, the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Aurora Point is also one of the most unique Sauvignons in Sonoma. Bright, chiseled and beautifully sculpted in the glass, the Aurora Point dazzles with its purity and overall finesse. Apricot pit, peach, slate and mint are some of the notes that flesh out, but it is ultimately the wine's textural and overall sense of harmony that truly stand out.
Stonestreet's 2013 Estate Chardonnay is fabulous. Apricot pit, butter, spices, wild flowers and honey meld together in a Chardonnay endowed with fabulous balance and tons of personality. The style is rich, resonant and racy; in other words classic Stonestreet. In 2013, the Estate Chardonnay is particularly of note.
The 2012 Merlot Jackson Park, from a site in Bennett Valley, is one of the more juicy, supple Merlots in this range. Dark red fruit, grilled herbs, rose petal and wild flowers add layers of nuance. This is another impeccable, harmonious wine from Matanzas Creek and Marcia Monahan.
The 2012 Red is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend made predominantly from vineyards in Knights Valley. Dark raspberry jam, mocha, chocolate, cinnamon and new leather flesh out in the glass, followed by attractive floral notes that add lift. Soft contours and a racy personality give the 2012 much of its immediacy and near-term appeal, but there is also plenty of power lurking beneath all the fruit.
