The 2013 Pinot Noir Land's Edge Vineyards is soft, open and expressive, all of which suggest it is best enjoyed over the next few years. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and a hint of new oak meld together on the supple finish. The Land's Edge is a blend of fruit from Far Coast and Seascape, and is a great introduction to the house style.
Game, smoke, tobacco, savory herbs and leather emerge from the 2013 Pinot Noir MacLean's Block. This is one of the wilder, more savory wines in the range. Slightly angular contours and incisive tannins give the MacLean's Block much of its distinctive personality.
The 2013 Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc Terrace Ridge is soft, pretty and expressive. Melon, white flowers and mint blossom in a textured, caressing white with tons of near and medium-term appeal.
The 2012 Merlot Sonoma County is absolutely delicious. Plums, black cherries, mocha, bittersweet chocolate and gravel jump from the glass in a deeply expressive, harmonious wine loaded with personality. Drink this plump, juicy Merlot over the next handful of years.
Bright and energetic, the 2013 Pinot Noir Jackson Estate Los Robles is quite expressive today. Crushed rocks, dark red cherries, mint and pine add nuance as this chiseled, Pinot shows off its considerable personality.
The darker, gamier side of Anderson Valley comes through in the 2013 Pinot Noir Jackson Estate Outland Ridge. A deep, powerful wine, the 2013 possesses notable richness and intensity, but at the same time, it comes across as a bit heavy and rough around the edges.
Another terrific value, the 2012 Merlot Vintner's Reserve is a tasty, easygoing red to drink over the near-term. Savory herbs, gravel, smoke and tobacco add nuance to a core of dark fruit in a friendly, supple Merlot with plenty of appeal.
The exuberance of the Russian River comes through in spades in the 2013 Chardonnay Jackson Estate Piner Hills. Almonds, hazelnuts, smoke and juicy ripe orchard fruit open up nicely in the glass. Attractive hints of spice round out the creamy, resonant finish. There is no shortage of personality here.
The 2013 Chardonnay Jackson Estate Camelot Highlands presents a distinctly Burgundian, reduced character, especially in its aromatics. Smoke, matchstick, apricot jam and wild flowers are all quite expressive in the glass. Stylistically, the Camelot Highlands stands apart from the rest of the wines in the range because of its reductive notes.
The 2013 Pinot Noir Grand Reserve is soft, supple and gracious. Sweet red cherries, cranberries, spices and crushed flowers are all laced together in an attractive, mid-weight Pinot to drink now and over the next year or two, while the flavors remain bright. Finding value in Pinot Noir is always a challenge. This is about as good as it gets.
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintner's Reserve is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Grilled herbs, cedar, new leather and dark red stone fruits add nuance on the soft, supple finish.
Kendall-Jackson's 2012 Stature Bordeaux Red Blend is laced with dark chocolate, mocha, plums, blackberry jam and spices, all in a sumptuous style that showcases power. This is a bit of an outlier in a range of wines that are in theory designed to showcase the attributes of specific vineyards. As such, the Stature comes across as a wine made in the cellar. There is not a whole lot of excitement here.
Honey, roasted almonds, dried pears and tropical fruits are laced throughout the 2013 Chardonnay Grand Reserve. This is a decidedly overt, racy Chardonnay from vineyards in Monterey and Santa Barbara.
Kendall-Jackson's 2013 Chardonnay Vintner's Reserve, the winery's flagship, presents lovely textural depth and resonance in its expressive apricot pit, peach, dried pear, spice and butter notes. Over the last few years, the Vintner's Reserve has been toned down a bit, with the buttery/oaky notes and sweetness dialed back and greater emphasis on freshness. Once again, it is hard not to be blown away by the production level here; there are three million cases of the 2013.
The 2012 Merlot Jackson Estate Taylor Peak hits the palate with huge dark fruit, chocolate, mocha, spices, tobacco, oak and leather. The super-rich, concentrated style comes across as a bit forced, while the balance of the best wines in this range is lacking.
The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Avant is soft, aromatically expressive and well suited to drinking over the next year or two, while the melon, pear and floral notes retain their brightness.
The 2013 Chardonnay Avant presents attractive lemon, citrus, floral and buttery notes, all in a soft, supple style intended for near-term drinking. Originally introduced as an alternative to the flagship Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay, the Avant is less differentiated today than it used to be, part of that also a reflection to tone down some of the more overt notes in the Vintner's Reserve. Still, readers will find a tasty, highly affordable wine that showcases the livelier side of Chardonnay.
The 2012 Red Wine Blend Avant is a pretty, fruit-driven wine to drink now and over the next few years. Plums, mocha, chocolate and spices flesh out in this sweet, supple red.
An opulent, totally enveloping wine, the 2013 La Joie races across the palate with remarkable depth, power and intensity. Inky blue and purplish fruit, smoke, tobacco, licorice and cloves open up as this dramatic, full-throttle Cabernet Sauvignon-based red shows off its considerable personality. Huge tannins lurk in the background but they are nearly covered by the sheer opulence of the fruit. A wine of considerable verticality and structure, the 2013 is going to require quite a bit of patience.
The Cabernet Franc-based 2012 Le Désir is the most aromatic and nuanced of these three 2012s. Savory herbs, mocha and spices meld into a core of punchy pomegranate and red stone fruit in a wine that is both silky and powerful. Here, too, readers can look forward to a long drinking window that will last two decades or so. In 2012, Le Désir is all about finesse.
Today, the 2013 Le Désir is the least showy of the three Vérité wines, but then again Cabernet Franc is often quite slow to reveal itself. At this stage, what comes through most is a remarkable sense of silkiness and nuance. Finely sculpted fruit and fabulous overall balance are among some of the other signatures. For such a big wine, the Le Désir is remarkably delicate.
Another huge wine, the 2013 La Muse is endowed with serious power and overall structure, especially compared to the 2012 tasted alongside it. Sweet tobacco, grilled herbs, cedar and smoke add considerable nuance. There is plenty of fruit and overall richness, but the imposing tannic heft is going to demand considerable cellaring. -
Mocha, chocolate, dark plums, smoke and cloves are some of the notes that inform the 2012 La Muse. Dark, sumptuous and impeccably balanced, the 2012 is super-impressive. The flavors are bold and intense, and while there is plenty of size and volume, the wine's balance is simply impeccable. I imagine the 2012 will reward drinkers with a good 20 years or so of very fine drinking pleasure.
The 2012 La Joie hits the palate with serious depth, power and structure. Dark plums, blackberry jam, graphite, grilled herbs and smoke literally jump from the glass. Deep, powerful and brooding, the 2012 is likely to require at least a few years to come together, but it is compelling, even at this early stage.
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Montana Vineyard has come together very nicely over the last year, as the savory, mineral notes have taken on greater prominence, while the fruit lies more in the background compared to the much more opulent Helena Dakota. The 2012 is a decidedly big, powerful wine built on a compelling interplay of rich fruit. Here, too, the Helena Montana could use more time in bottle to fully come together, even though it is quite striking now. This is a big boy, there is no question of that.
