The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Dakota Vineyard is much darker and textured than the Montana, mostly because of the slate rock in these three blocks. Sweet dark blueberries, black berries, licorice, violets and melted road tar all flesh out in the glass. A structured, dense wine, the 2008 is totally alive in the glass. The balance of fruit and structure is simply compelling. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.
Hartford Court's 2010 Pinot Noir Land's Edge Vineyards brings together fruit from Far Coast and Seascape, a blend that works very nicely. Far Coast provides the body and structure, while Sea Scape contributes aromatic delineation and energy. There is an element of lift and sheer nuance in the Land's Edge that is wonderful. Here, too, I find superb precision in the flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020
A gorgeous wine, the 2010 Pinot Noir Seascape Vineyard is full of character. Savory herbs, tobacco and licorice are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. Focused, bright and beautifully articulated, the 2011 is an excellent rendering of Pinot from this coastal site just west of Occidental. This is yet another in a series of hugely impressive wines from Hartford Court. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
Hartford's 2010 Pinot Noir Arrendell Vineyard captures the best qualities of Russian River Pinot. Juicy and explosive, the 2010 is layered and nuanced throughout. Juicy dark cherries, hard candy, mint and freshly cut flowers are all alive in the glass. The Arrendell has a level of inner perfume, complexity and sheer sweetness that is remarkable. Hints of sage, rosemary and mint add nuance on the close. This is a gorgeous wine from start to finish. Arrendell, one of the cooler sites on the Russian River, was planted in 1975 with the Martini clone. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
The 2011 Zinfandel Hartford Vineyard boasts gorgeous depth of fruit and pure radiance. Juicy, dark and expressive, the 2011 has tons of palate presence and texture, all while expressing plenty of varietal character and nuance. There is a lot to admire here. Sweet floral notes add a level of brightness that is unusual for an old-vine Zinfandel made from such tiny yields. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021.
The 2011 Zinfandel Dina's Vineyard is another of the more polished wines in this lineup. Juicy dark cherries, plums, menthol, violets and new leather all take shape in this sensual, layered Zinfandel. This Dina's is arguably the most complete wine in the range of 2011 Zinfandels. It should drink well pretty much right out of the gate, but also clearly has the potential to improve in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021.
The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Montana Vineyard stands out for its delineation and nuance. A vibrant, powerful wine, the 2010 faithfully expresses the signatures of this site. Violets, cloves, blackberry jam and white pepper all make an appearance in this luscious full-bodied wine. The 2010 is both large-scaled and opulent, yet it also has great underlying intensity and tannin. Mocha, sweet spices and a hint of French oak inform the serious, intense finish. As always, the Helena Montana is sleek and polished. In 2010, it is particularly compelling. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.
Anakota's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Dakota Vineyard is wonderfully alive in the glass. Freshly cut flowers, violets, spices, graphite and mint are all woven together in a Cabernet that has plenty of mountain character as well as pure opulence. All the elements are very much in balance. These red soils rich in volcanic deposits contribute tension and verve as the flavors built to a huge crescendo of intense pleasure. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.
The 2011 La Muse is a beautiful wine. Here the fruit shows redder-hued tons of dark raspberry, plums, mint, crushed rocks and savory herbs. The 2011 isn-t as exuberant as most other vintages, instead it is a wine that impresses for its length, inner energy and long, impeccable finish. Today, the 2011 comes across as a bit compact relative to most versions, but it has considerable potential. This is a terrific showing. The blend is 89% Merlot, 7% Malbec and 4% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.
The estate's 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Montana Vineyard wraps around the palate with serious depth in its purple fruit, grilled savory herbs, licorice, mint and white flowers. A rich, powerful wine, the 2008 impresses for its totally expressive, layered personality. At the same time, firm mountain tannins support the finish and add compelling vibrancy. This dark, brooding beauty is a bit of a brute today, but there is plenty of intensity and more than enough balance to make me think the wine will be delicious in another few years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.
The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Christopher's is packed with serious depth. A rich, opulent wine, the 2010 caresses the palate with inky dark fruit, cloves, mint, licorice and mocha. There is plenty of fatness and intensity in the glass, but not as much underlying structure, as a wine like this needs to age more than a decade or so. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2015.
Another drop-dead gorgeous wine, the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Aurora Point is laced with sweet apricots, white flowers, ginger, passion fruit and crushed rocks. Soft, perfumed and beautifully layered, the 2010 impresses for its soft, enveloping personality. Pure class, that's all there is to it. The Aurora Point is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from high-altitude vineyards. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016.
Stonestreet's 2011 Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc Terrace Ridge is gorgeous. Underlying veins of clean, bracing minerality lend support to the highly expressive varietal aromas and flavors. Lemon oil, lychee and jasmine are some of the nuances that inform the taut, beautifully delineated finish. This is a fabulous effort from Stonestreet. The 2011 is 62% Semillon and 38% Sauvignon Blanc, from vineyards in Alexander Valley, vinified and aged in oak. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016.
Orange blossoms, nectarines, white flowers and honey all flesh out in the 2011 Chardonnay Bear Point. Another wine that manages to be both rich but not ponderous, the 2011 Bear Point blossoms in all directions as the fruit opens up in the glass. A creamy, highly expressive finish rounds things out in style. The Bear Point is made from the Peter Michael Chardonnay clone, which is believed to have originated on this property! Anticipated maturity: 2014-2018.
The 2011 Chardonnay Upper Barn comes across deep, rich and implosive. A wine of considerable energy and sheer power, the 2011 boasts serious extract. The Upper Barn is the biggest and broadest of the Stonestreet Chardonnays. It will appeal most to readers who like powerful Chardonnays. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2018.
The 2010 Pinot Noir Far Coast Vineyard stands out for its deep, resonant personality. Firm tannins keep the fruit from being truly expressive, but there is no shortage of depth and nuance in the glass. The 2010 Far Coast is one of the few wines in this range that needs another year or two in bottle for the tannins to start melting away. Sweet floral and spice notes add lift on the finish. The appropriately named Far Coast Pinot emerges from a site north of Fort Ross on the upper reaches of the Sonoma Coast. This site sits at an elevation of 900-1,200 feet. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
The 2010 Pinot Noir Fog Dance Vineyard is another wine endowed with serious depth and richness. Juicy dark cherries, cola, new leather, cloves and orange rind all burst from the glass. This is a decidedly rich, explosive wine that stands out for its extroverted personality. Layers of fruit continue to blossom in the glass as the wine shows off its raciness. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
A wine of considerable muscle and depth, the 2011 Zinfandel Highwire Vineyard stands apart for its plushness and richness. Layers of dark, floral-infused red/black hued fruit saturate the palate. The 2011 is gorgeous today, but it should also age nicely for at least a handful of years. The Highwire is one of the more overtly fruit-driven Zinfandels in this range. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021.
Honey, almonds, tropical fruit, butter, sweet spices, nectarines are all present in the 2011 Chardonnay Camelot Highlands. The 2011 possesses gorgeous inner sweetness and perfume with plenty of body but no excess heaviness. Today, it is compelling. I tasted the 2011 from tank, just prior to bottling.
The 2011 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley stands out in this lineup for its sensual, layered personality. At the same time, there is plenty of delineation in the glass. Floral notes are woven throughout, adding an element of lift, precision and pure nuance. In 2011, the Russian River Pinot is all about persistence and definition. It is a beautiful wine, especially within its price range. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.
The 2011 Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard, from vines that were planted over 100 years ago, is pure minerality. Reticent and intensely saline, the 2011 is intriguing, but also quite shut down today. Exotic citrus peel and floral notes emerge over time, but readers will have to be patient. Today, the Fanucchi-Wood Road is very much closed in on itself. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021.
A deeply scented, perfumed wine, the 2011 Pinot Noir impresses for its nuanced personality and sheer detail. Dark cherry notes lead to plums, cloves, menthol and crushed rocks. The 2011 is all about delineation, nuance and freshness, all qualities that are very much present in the glass. This is a terrific first effort from Champs de Reves. These vines were only planted in 2006. It will be fascinating to see what develops here in the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019.
The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard comes across as surprisingly round and rich for the site. Black cherries, smoke, tar, licorice and asphalt all meld together in the glass. At five years of age, the 2008 has softened a little, and all the elements are very nicely fused together. Salty, saline notes underpin the gorgeous finish. The 2008 spent 24 months in American oak barrels (40% new). Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
The 2010 Red Wine is juicy, expressive and very nicely balanced. Raspberry jam, flowers, grilled herbs, mocha, violets, French oak, graphite and tar all meld together. This is an especially seamless wine for the year. The firm Knights Valley tannins are well-balanced. A juicy, explosive finish rounds things out nicely. The 2010 is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 4% Malbec. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2022.
The 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Bennett Valley is direct, focused and very nicely balanced. Partial aging in cask gives the 2011 an attractive richness without overpowering the wine or detracting from its vibrancy. Hints of pear, apricot and jasmine flow through to the round, inviting finish. A portion of the 2011 was aged in cask, but the oak is not especially noticeable. This is another gorgeous wine from Matanzas Creek. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016.
