Giant Steps
2020 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay
94 Points Natasha Hughes, Club Oenologique

This tastes like a citrus grove has exploded on your palate, with mandarin zest, yuzu and pink grapefruit all partying together. There’s some stone fruit and hazelnuts along with a hint of honeyed richness and a salty mineral note. The texture is thick and weighty, but thanks to the lively acidity there’s focus too. Beautifully balanced, despite the power. Drinking Window 2024 – 2035.

A delicate wine that’s all about elegance rather than power. Notes of bergamot, white blossom and toasted hazelnut, with a note of pickled ginger on the long finish. Crisp and seamless. Drinking Window 2024 – 2035.

Giant Steps
2023 Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir
94 Points Natasha Hughes, Club Oenologique

The fruit here is spiced red cherry and raspberry, with an unexpected twist of tamarillo. The subtle oak is already beginning to integrate well. Silky, supple tannins show some gentle grip. Drinking Window 2024 – 2032.

Giant Steps
2023 Tarraford Vineyard Chardonnay
94 Points Natasha Hughes, Club Oenologique

Textural and rich but surprisingly bright, with tangy acidity shot through a palate full of pineapple and tangerine fruit, tinged with a hint of vanilla oak on the long finish. Drinking Window 2025 – 2035

2011 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay
93 Points Natasha Hughes, Club Oenologique

Drinking remarkably well, disproving the notion that these wines can’t age. There’s a salty twang that adds briskness to a palate of mandarins, spice and grilled pineapple, and a honeyed richness that adds gravitas to the long, tangy finish. Drinking really well now but seems capable of hanging around for a while yet. Drinking Window 2024 – 2030.

2013 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay

A punchy, focused wine that combines primary notes of pineapple and orange zest with opulent tertiary notes of sandalwood and a suggestion of orange blossom on the long finish, driven by vibrant acidity. Drinking Window 2024 – 2030.

2023 Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir
93 Points Natasha Hughes, Club Oenologique

Darker and denser than the other three Pinots in this line-up – damsons and dark cherries, with brighter notes of orange zest that lift the aromatics. Plush tannins, generous and weighty palate. Drinking Window 2025 – 2035.

Giant Steps
2010 Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir
92 Points Natasha Hughes, Club Oenologique

There’s a fine balance of primary red berry and cherry fruit and more developed notes of salty red miso and autumn leaves on the nose and palate. Tannins are fine but still quite present and maybe a bit firm on the long finish. Drinking Window 2024 – 2028.

Giant Steps
2014 Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir
92 Points Natasha Hughes, Club Oenologique

Concentrated raspberry and rosehip fruit with herbal undertones and plenty of savoury character and evidence of some earthy development. There’s enough focus to allow this wine to continue to develop for a few more years yet. Drinking Window 2024 – 2030.

2023 Jakkalsfontein Syrah
Meryl Weaver, Platter's South African Wine Guide 4.5 stars

Juicy red fruit & white pepper spice in vivacious 2023. Older oak, 9 months, provides integrated
backdrop, allowing fruit centre stage. Not weighty or intense, but loads of character, still youthful & vital,
lots of life ahead. One to watch.

Capensis
2020 Fijnbosch Chardonnay
Meryl Weaver, Platter's South African Wine Guide 5 Stars

From Banghoek home-farm, 2020 displays the most intensity, breadth & structure of the chardonnays,
even in riper year. Riveting freshness & zesty, lingering mandarin flavours to the fore, a perfect foil
for serious oaking, 50% new. More expressive in youth than 2019 (95 pts), as distinguished & age
worthy.

Capensis

Classically styled, as ever, even more structured in fine 2021 vintage. Fruit from five W Cape sites,
barrel fermented/10 months (as Fijnbosch), 40% new, adding toasty enhancement to bright, tangy
citrus & ripe pear flavours, thrilling intensity & freshness. A youthful beauty that deserves cellaring

2022 Silene Chardonnay
Meryl Weaver, Platter's South African Wine Guide 4.5 Stars

Mostly brought-in Stellenbosch fruit plus Fijnbosch grapes in 2022. Sleek, succulent, with gentle
greengage, melon & citrus notes. Layers of flavour, creamy lees & toasty nuances from intricate
vinification in array of vessels: oak barrel, 30% new, foudre & ceramic pot. All elements in harmony,
elegantly styled & already tempting but with greater rewards for the patient.

Rhubarb, fresh strawberries and strawberry leaf tickle the nose. On the palate, it delivers flavors of strawberries and cream, strawberry soda and subtle notes of rhubarb and raspberry seed. A sharp entry leads to a creamy, mouthwatering mid-palate, evolving into a long, satisfying ending.

Ripe mandarin and grapefruit, banana and a honeyed oxidative note with an open, forward citrus nose of orange blossom and slightly forward fruit but bone dry underneath. It feels like it’s missing a middle. Heavily worked, but also pineappley and sweet/sour. Hmmm.
